Nuru The Light!!!

Jestina George had an opportunity to interview Artist  Fashion Blogger Nuru the Light and she gave us the full deets on her latest single ‘MUHOGO ANDAZI. Enjoy!!!!

JG: Why did you choose to pursue a music career?

NURU: IV BEEN SINGING SINCE THE AGE OF FOUR, I USED TO STAND WITH THE FAMILY CHOIR IN THE CHURCH AND SING. MY GRANDFATHER CANALI/MCHUNGAJI MAGOKE WAS A MAN OF GOD AND LIVED BY THE NAME OF GOD, SO BEING AROUND THAT WITH THE CHOIR I STARTED SINGING AT A VERY YOUNG AGE IT WAS AT 16YEARS OF AGE THAT I SIGNED A RECORD DEAL WITH STOCKHOLM RECORDS AND MY ARTIST NAME THEN WAS DANUMA.SO PROFESSIONALLY I STARTED AT 16 TO GO ON TOUR AND TRAVELLED ALOT PLUS ALL THAT COMES WITH THE JOB.

JG: How has the journey been since you started doing music?

NURU: AM GLAD THAT I STARTED YOUNG BECAUSE IT GAVE ME THE TOOLS, BOTH GOOD AND BAD THAT COMES WITH THIS JOB. AND ALSO A CHANCE TO MAKE MISTAKES SO THAT TODAY I CAN SAY I KNOW BETTER IN TERMS OF SIGNING A GOOD DEAL AND LOOK OUT FOR MYSELF. AT 16 I WAS JUST HAPPY TO BE SIGNED BUT TODAY I WOULDNT SETTLE FOR JUST THAT.

THE JOURNEY HAS BEEN BOTH GOOD AND BAD BUT THEN AGAIN I DONT KNOW IF I WOULD HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY BUT AT THE SAME TIME IV LEARNED ALOT ALONG THE WAY, BOTH AS A WOMAN AND AN ARTIST.

IV BEEN LIED TO, PROMISED THINGS THAT NEVER HAPPEN, SOME EVEN TAKEN MY MONEY, TRUSTED THE WRONG PEOPLE BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY IT MADE ME STRONG SO THAT TODAY I CAN STAND UP FOR MYSELF, AS OPRAH ALWAYS TELLS HER GUESTS "SIGN YOUR OWN CHECKS!"

JG: What inspires you as a singer?

NURU: LIFE INSPIRES ME NOT JUST MINE BUT OTHERS ASWELL. SINGING IS MY PASSION, IS A WAY OF LIVING AND ITS SOMETHING THAT GOD BLESSED ME WITH.

MY VOICE IS A GIFT AND AM NOT GONNA LET GOD DOWN BY NOT USING IT....

JG: How long have you been singing for and how have you evolved as an artist?

NURU: IV BEEN SINGING SO LONG BUT EVOLVING AS AN ARTIST HAS ALOT TO DO WITH HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF. MY VOICE IS MY TOOL AND JUST AS YOUR BODY YOU HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF IT.

SMOKING, DRINKING, DRUGS AND SOME FOOD DESTROYS WHAT YOU HAVE IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL BUT TO ME TAKING LESSONS,LISTENING AND WORKING WITH OTHER ARTISTS AND ALWAYS LEARNING NEW THING MAKES ME EVOLVE AS AN ARTIST.

JG: What are your views on the Tanzanian entertainment industry today?

NURU: OUR TANZANIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY NEEDS MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED CAUSE AS OF RIGHT NOW FEW PEOPLE CONTROL THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AND THAT IS WHAT MAKES US NOT TO MOVE FORWARD. WE NEED MORE VARIETY RATHER THAN TWO VIEWS AND HOW TO RUN THINGS. WE NEED RISK TAKERS WHO ARE WILLING TO TAKE A CHANCE.,.,INSHALLAH WE WILL SEE...

JG: What are the best and worst parts of being an artist in Tanzania, though you live in Europe?

NURU: THE WORST IS THAT PEOPLE DON'T SEE YOUR VIEW OR GET IT RIGHT AWAY..THEY ARE SO USED IN DOING SOMETHING IN ONE WAY THAT IS WHY SO IT TAKES TIME TO CONVISCE THEM. SOMETIMES THEY DONT RESPECT SUDDEN ASPECTS LIKE TIME IS MONEY AND PROFFESIONALISM WHEN IT COMES TO WORK.

FOR EXAMPLE IF I AM NOT PRESENT IN TANZANIA MY WORK GOES VERY SLOW BECAUSE AM NOT THERE TO PUSH EVERYBODY WHILE THEY ARE ALREADY PAID AND THATS VERY SAD. THE GOOD PART IS THAT IN EUROPE I CAN LIVE MY LIFE AND GO ON WITHOUT THINKING THE PAPS ARE THERE.

I CAN GO TO A CLUB AND GO WILD WITHOUT SAYING OH GOSH, HERE AM JUST NURU AS OPPOSE TO NURU THE LIGHT OR NURU THE SINGER. AT MY WORK PEOPLE DONT EVEN KNOW THAT I SING AND AM OK WITH THAT.

JG: Would you say the bad economy crisis the world is currently facing as affected you directly as a singer?

NURU: IT HASNT REALLY AS A SINGER MAYBE ON A PERSONAL LEVEL BUT THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS GONNA LIVE BECAUSE WHEN PEOPLE ARE SAD OR GOING THROUGH A HARD THING IN LIFE MUSIC ALWAYS HELPS SO IN THE LONG RUN IT HASN'T EFFECTED ME MUCH WHICH I THANK GOD FOR THAT.

JG: How many videos have you made till date? Name them if you can please

NURU: MORE THAN TEN VIDEOS BUT AM JUST GONNA NAME THE SWAHILI VERSIONS

WALIMWENGU
MSELA
KWANINI
"MUHOGO ANDAZI"
WAS FEAUTERED IN CHEGES VIDEO, MORACKA, AND QUICK ROCKA CALLED BULLET WHICH I WAS A LEAD GIRL.., FUN TIMES

JG: Tell us what inspired the concept for your latest single ‘MUHOGO ANDAZI’ and also tell us a bit about the video?

NURU: HAHAHAAHAHAHA THE SONG CAME ABOUT AS A JOKE, WE WERE IN THE STUDIO N BOB SAID NURU WE SHOULD CALL THE SONG MUHOGO ANDAZI AND I WENT LIKE HAHAHAAHA WE MJINGA NINI, UTANIITAJE MM ANDAZI AND THEN I STARTED SINGING CAUSE THE MELODY JUST CAME TO ME AND I SANG WE MUHOGO WEE AND HE ANSWERED ANDAZI WE AND THATS THE STORY OF HOW IT ALL STARTED. THIS SONG HAS ITS ON HISTORY BECAUSE SO MANY THINGS HAPPENED WHILE RECORDING LIKE COMPUTER DIED ON US WHILE RECORDING..,

Nuru at the studio recording "MUHOGO ANDAZI"

JG: How long did it take to shoot the video?

NURU: THE VIDEO TOOK 4HOURS ONLY TO SHOOT BECAUSE I ALWAYS COME PREPARED ON MY VIDEO SHOOT AND OTHERS.

JG: Tell us about the team behind the video, Who wrote the ‘Muhogo Andazi’, who produced it and who was your glam squad ? Who are you wearing? We’re style spotting already and we spot Chichia London, are we right?

NURU: THE SONG WAS RECORDED AT AT SHAROBARO RECORDS IN MAGOMENI AND BOB JUNIOR MR CHOCOLATE FLAVOUR PRODUCED THE SONG AND WROTE MOST OF THE LYRICS BUT MELODIES AND HARMONIES THAT WE DID BOTH ME AND HIM.

THE TEAM BEHIND WAS VISUAL LAB WITH ADAM JUMA AS A VIDEO DIRECTOR WHO CAME WITH HIS CREW AND MAKE UP PEOPLE BUT I DID MY MAKE UP ALL BY MYSELF SINCE I KNEW EXACTLY WHICH KIND OF LOOK I WANTED FOR THE SHOOT. I WORE MAC FOUNDATION AS A BASE AND I DONT HAVE ANYTHING ELSE EXCEPT THAT AND THE RED LIPS OFFCOZ.

I WORE TWO DRESSES BY CHICHIA LONDON AND TWO DRESSES FROM H&M. I WORE A COPPAR BRACELET/NECKLACE AND BANGLES FROM MADE BY AFRICA ANOTHER TANZANIAN BRAND MAKING GOOD STUFF. AND MR CHOCOLATE FLAVOUR WORE HIS YOUTHFULL SWAGG.,

Nuru at the shoot of her new video 'MUHOGO ANDAZI"

JG: Wow! You did a great job with the make up, now our favourite part, Talk us through wardrobe for the music video.

NURU: WHEN IT COMES TO MY WARDROBE FOR THE VIDEO I USUALLY PUT TOGETHER EVERYTHING THE NIGHT BEFORE AND I EAN EVERYTHING, FROM THE ACCESSORIES,TO SHOES,UNDERWEAR AND THE ACTUAL DRESS OR PANTS. I DO SO BECAUSE I WANNA COME PREPARED AND IT SAVES A LOT OF TIME WHEN YOU ARE IN LOCATION AND IT'S STRESS FREE. FOR THIS ONE IT WAS VERY EASY SINCE I KNEW AM WEARING CHICHIA AND MY LONG GREEN MAXI DRESS AND I WAS GOOD TO GO WHICH YOU ALL CAN SEE. YA ANOTHA THING DO YOU KNOW THAT I DID MY MAKE UP ON THE WAY TO LOCATION USING A SIGHT MIRROR OF THE CAR HAHAHAAHAH...,AND HOW GREAT IT TURNED OUT TO BE..,

JG: What should we look forward to next from Nuru?

NURU: AM NOT JUST A SINGER AM ALSO A FASHION BLOGGER, SO YOU SHOULD EXPECT A LOT MORE FROM ME CAUSE THERE IS MORE COMING INSHALLAH!!

JG: Do you have a message for our readers and your fans?

NURU: MY MESSAGE TO ALL THE READERS IS THAT WE AS BLACK WOMEN SHOULD LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF,TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER, LOVE ONE ANOTHER AND BE GREAT ROLE MODELS TO OUR CHILDREN,THE TIME FOR A CHANGE HAS COME THAT WHEN YOU SEE YOUR FELLOW SISTER TRYING TO MAKE IT LEND HER A HAND AND WALK WITH HER AND TELL HER GO FOR IT BECAUSE SHE IS WORTH IT. AHSANTE!

Check out the video "MUHOGO ANDAZI" BELOW":

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME NURU & WE WISH YOU ALL THE BEST!!

JG

JG: CAN YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF?

ALEX: My name is Alex Kajumulo. I was born in Muleba, Bukoba, Tanzania. Currently, I live in the U.S. (Seattle, Washington) where I coach youth soccer and run my own soccer training program. It's the only soccer program run by an African in Washington State. When I am not coaching soccer, I am making music, writing books, and designing sports clothing and gear.

JG: WHEN DID YOU START DOING MUSIC & WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU DO?

ALEX: I have loved music my whole life especially when I was a child. I began making music professionally in 1998, collaborating with my good friend Kool James "Mtoto wa Dandu" and the amazing singer Mbilia Bell, from DRCongo. My music can not be labelled by anyone, it is it's own new style. That's why I called my first album "Never Before." You can find this album and all of my music on I-tunes, Spotify, Amazon, and anywhere digital music is sold.

JG: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF BONGO FLAVA & THE KILI MUSIC AWARDS?

ALEX: As a Tanzanian, I love Bongo Flava music. But I don't think Bongo Flava will translate to an international market. If Bongo Flava musicians want to get world wide appeal, they have to do something more original. Someone like Remi Ongallo, who was a true original, his music is still being listened to in the international world music market even today. The music is so good they listen even if they don't understand the language.

You know the Kili Music Awards started from my vision. I wrote up a plan for the Tanzanian Music Awards and gave the plan to James Dandu in 1999. It's not an original idea, it is just a copy of the American Music Awards. James and I presented the first Tanzanian Music Awards. After James died, his wife, Devota, was able to put on one more Tanzanian Music Awards but then she returned to Europe.

The people who are running the Kili Music Awards took the event over and are continuing to this day. They changed the name of the Awards and I do not have anything to do with it. I don't like the way they manage the awards, the awards are only given to insiders and I don't think it is fair and open to all Tanzanian musicians. Our original vision was to recognize original talent no matter who they were, who they knew, or how much money they had. Especially young musicians.

I am working to restart the Tanzanian Music Awards so that I can realize mine and my friend James's vision of making it for all people of Tanzania.

JG: IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE DOEN TO MAKE THINGS BETTER OR IS IT OK THAT WAY?

ALEX: I am happy for them to continue to hold the Kili Music Awards according to their own vision. But it is not my vision and I would like to bring back the Tanzanian Music Awards for the people. One of the awards I am looking forward to presenting is the JAMES DANDU ORIGINAL ARTIST AWARD for the most original Tanzanian musician each year.

JG: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER UPCOMING ARTISTS & YOUNG PEOPLE OUT THERE?

ALEX: You've got to be original. These days anyone can make music and record with digital equipment so in order to stand out you must be original.

JG: WHO HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION?

ALEX: My inspiration is me! I grew with a lot of problems and no one to rely on. I rely on myself for inspiration and I have gone far, but I always put God in front of me for everything I do, but I am not religious.

JG: WHAT DIFFICULTIES DOU YOU FACE & WHAT ARE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR?

ALEX: The most difficult part of being an independant musician is marketing your music and making enough money to eat.

JG: WHERE DO YOU PERFORM IF ONE WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU PERFOM LIVE?

ALEX: I only really perform for special events that involve social justice. When I do perform, I perform with a large band, at least 8 members. I perform mostly at College venues, Festivals, and big Theatres.

I am currently organizing a large event to promote Malaria Awareness in Kyela District, Tanzania. The "Malaria is Dangerous" concert will be held on Saba Saba Day (July 7) 2011. This will be my second big "Malaria is Dangerous" Concert. The first was held in November of 2010 here in the U.S. YOu can find clips from the concert on my youtube channel. It was also televised locally and broadcast live on the internet to an audience of over 8 million people.

JG: APART FROM MUSIC WHAT OTHER THINGS ARE YOU INVOLVED IN?

ALEX: Soccer is a big part of my life. I have written a book for children called "Soccer Monster" you can see it at www.soccermonster.org. At that website you can also find information about my training program. You can see my youth soccer team at www.kajumulofc.org. You can find out more about me and my music at www.babukaju.com and www.alexkajumulo.com or become my friend on facebook, look for Alex Kajumulo. You can also find me on myspace at www.myspace.com/alexkajumulo. I have over 85 songs on the market, you can buy them at I-tunes or anywhere else and you can see my videos on my youtube channel at www.youtube.com/user/alexkajumulo.

JG: I HAVE HEARD THAT YOU HAVE A BOOK COMING OUT SOON, CAN YOU PLESE TELL US ABOUT IT AND WHERE WE CAN GET OUR COPIES?

ALEX: My latest book is called FADHAA and will be released this summer. It is a novel (fiction) that asks the question, When love ends, does life continue? I wrote my first novel in Swahili because that is my native language and I love my language. I have written this story for the people of my country. Later, FADHAA will be made into a movie, but I am currently shooting a movie called "Searching for Love" which will be released next summer (2012). Of course, I also have the Soccer Monster book for the children of the world. It is written in English because it is a universal sport. I am planning more Soccer Monster books and translations into different languages.

YALIOYOJIRI SEMINA YA WAKINA MAMA NCHINI UINGEREZA TAREHE 21 MAY 2011

Objectives:
The seminar aims to: Raise HIV and AIDS awareness, discuss issues of stigma, discrimination, denial, acceptance and disclosure of HIV status, training needs, develop support and social network groups among the African communities living in the UK.

Jibu hakuna mtu ambaye anaweza kutambua labda mtu akiwa mahututi kitandani.

Mama Balozi alimkaribisha Mama Waziri Mkuu.

Dressed to kill. Our sisters looking good.Picture courtesy of Miss Jestina's Blog.(1st left ).

'SOS' Appeal!

Yea,I normally blog about politics and such stuffs, but, well, there's no harm in touching some other  issues that make the world go around.I'm talking about fashion. If you happen to visit as many blogs each day as I do you certainly would appreciate that our sisters are doing quite an excellent job in blogging about different stuffs in our lives, especially fashion. However, unfortunately, most of them tend to 'forget' including men's fashion trends in their blogs. They justifiably could 'defend' themselves by arguing that it's not up to them to make sure that we look as good as they normally do.But,honestly, when you have the likes of me whose taste for fashion is as good as a blind man in a dark alley, that spells trouble, and calls for an urgent need for help.Arguably,I'm not an exceptional case as there's probably a whole bunch of guys out there who seriously need help. So,come on sisters,we all know that if what a man dresses pleases you it certainly would please the rest of the world.Could you kindly please think of us,at least once a month, when you keep your audience posted about latest fashion trends?
