JAY-Z TOPS THE SOURCE'S MOST POWERFUL PLAYERS IN HIP-HOP

Although his Blueprint 3 album is not due until later this year, he's still a power player, according to The Source magazine's annual "Power 30" list.

The long-running hip-hop magazine will land atop their annual list this year, when the magazine drops its new issue later this month.
He's the frontrunner, said the mag, because he's an industry leader and a top businessman, boasting a portfolio that includes ventures with Live Nation, Rocawear, and a small stake ownership -- along with a group of investors -- in the NBA franchise, the New Jersey Nets.

Other names on the list include Lil Wayne, Diddy, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Kimora Lee Simmons, and T-Pain, among others.

Barack Obama (because of his influence on the new hip-hop generation) and the Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.an are also named as "Power 30" honorees.

"The Black Eyed Peas is like one of the biggest groups on the planet. We go out to Brazil, you know, a million, two hundred thousand people is at our concert," Will explained to the mag.

The "Power 30" issue features a coverstory from T.I. and his Grand Hustle crew, and what the rapper's hustle will be post-incarceration.

MICHELLE OBAMA and CARLA BRUNI-SARKOZY.As I am not into the fashion stuffs,let me turn to The Telegraph for a helping hand:

Two tall women, one of them a model, were swinging in step in classic “paired” runway formation. Both were almost identically dressed in knee-length cream with belts, bare legs and heels. They could almost have been modelling some designers’ collection named “First Lady Spring 2009”.

Undoubtedly the choice of colour worn by Mrs Obama and Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy was a coincidence. Hell would surely freeze before two such self-confident dressers would confer over what to wear.

Certainly, there will be some questions asked over whether a light, summery colour is disrespectful on a sombre day of remembrance.

Sarah Brown stayed with the tradition of sober attire, safely putting her out of the way of fashion attention.

As for the other two, their Caen encounter was the sequel to their first-round meeting at the G8 in Strasbourg, where — to either their amusement or embarrassment — both women turned up wearing coats with large pussycat bow necklines.

On that occasion, the outcome may not necessarily have been to Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy’s liking.

Mrs Obama, the international new girl, was wearing a cabbage-rose print outfit from the American designer Thakoon and won rave reviews.

By contrast, Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy stuck to the demure greys and flat shoes she had so far judged necessary to counterbalance her colourful past and shorter husband. Standing next to Mrs Obama, she found the American had a two-inch advantage on her. So at this fashion face-off, it’s fascinating to see how things have changed.

The French president’s wife chose Dior again, but dropped the grey in favour of a youthfully chic and flattering cap-sleeved ivory satin sheath with a gathered neckline – just the sort of arm-revealing dress Michelle Obama has made her signature.

However, the American First Lady chose to relinquish what her husband jokingly called her “right to bare arms” for the day, choosing to put a coat by Narciso Rodriguez over a dress by Michael Kors (both New York designers), though the belt she wore was by Givenchy.

The most significant detail of all, however, is found in the two pairs of shoes on the Caen red carpet. Mrs Obama wore silver Jimmy Choos. But for the first time since marrying, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was seen wearing heels.

President Jakaya Kikwete yesterday pointed fingers at businessmen who for years have exploited poor farmers by buying cheap from them and selling dear on the world market, pledging measures to redress the situation.

The President made the remarks in Dar es Salaam when speaking at the 6th Tanzania National Business Council (TNBC) meeting whose theme this year is ‘Agriculture First.’

The meeting hosting more than 400 local and international delegates is discussing and exploring untapped opportunities in the agricultural sector.

He said businessmen have been profiting from the farmers’ sweat by underpaying them on the pretext that prices in the world market have gone down.

“We will not tolerate them any more…their days are numbered,” he said, adding that businessmen should buy farmers’ produce at a reasonable price.

“There are instances when a businessman buys produce at 200/- per kilo and sells it at 800/- in the world market…this is pure exploitation which must be stopped,” he said.

President Kikwete said the government would soon put in place a mechanism that would force business people to comply with farmers’ set price, a move that would help reduce the scale of the problem.

He however pointed out that the country’s agricultural sector can only move forward if irrigation farming would be fully deployed. Kikwete told participants that it was prime time for Tanzania’s farmers to shift from traditional to modern farming.

“We, in the government, believe that the Agricultural Sector Development Programme embraces almost all the basic theoretical frameworks about why Tanzania’s agriculture is backward and what needs to be done. What remains is doing what is envisaged in the programme in terms of actualization and time frame,” he said, adding:

“ASDP seeks to see a number of interventions to deal with constraints in agriculture. One is to increase use of irrigation in farming. Overdependence on rain has kept our agriculture backwards for many years. Two is to increase the use of high yield seeds by farmers. We need to build local capacity in research and seed production.” He also noted that there was a need to increase the use of fertilizer among farmers.

“Low use of fertilizer has kept productivity low,” he stressed.

The President also underscored the need to increase the use of insecticides and pesticides as well as enabling farmers to use modern skills and techniques in production through extension services and use of agricultural research findings.

President Kikwete said that there was a need to improve crop marketing infrastructure; as well as all other services that will impact on agriculture, including improvement on physical infrastructure, access to finance for agriculture, facilitating growth of manufacturing and industries which add value to agriculture.

The other critical factor is the promotion of the large scale agriculture in Tanzania to complement smallholder and peasant agriculture. He noted that there is plenty of land which can be utilized by large scale farmers to increase agricultural production and productivity in the country.

“I would like us to discuss how best we can leverage private capital into large scale farming in Tanzania. I want us to discuss ways and means of attracting investors both local and foreign in farming and livestock development,” he said.
