Thank you for visiting our Kickstarter page! The music you heard in the video above is called 'muziki wa dansi', a unique style of music indigenous to Tanzania.
More than 100,000 hours of music like this is sitting idle and all but forgotten on deteriorating reel-to-reel tapes at the headquarters for the Tanzanian Broadcasting Corporation in Dar es Salaam. The Radio Tanzania archives are running out of time and it's our goal to digitize and preserve them before it's too late. Remarkably, our project coincides with the 50th anniversary of Tanzania's independence from colonial rule. It's the perfect time to celebrate Tanzanian culture by preserving and reviving  this treasure of national heritage.
In fact, the music we are determined to protect is the product of Tanzania's struggle for self-determination, cultural identification, and political and economic development after over a hundred years of colonialism and oppression. Tanzania's first president, Julius K. Nyerere, created Radio Tanzania and a Ministry of Culture specifically to encourage musical expression and to promote national unity. There is more than just "musiki wa dansi," too. The archives contain radio dramas, educational programming, field recordings of indigenous tribal music, Congolese-inspired rhumba, and more. I plan to use my own savings (approx. $5,000) to make a preliminary trip to Tanzania to film the 50th anniversary musical celebrations and to begin the digitization. The Kickstarter funds will be used to purchase equipment for the digitization, to pay royalty fees to musicians and the Tanzanian government, and to produce a "Best of Radio Tanzania" compilation CD with extensive liner notes, photographs, and lyric translations. In order to make the digitization sustainable and directly beneficial to the local community, we are going to establish a Radio Tanzania Digitization workshop that will train Tanzanians in the digitization process and will employ locals to run the workshop in our absence.
We also hope to film several short pieces about the archives and the digitization process. Many of the musicians whose work is contained on the reel-to-reels are still alive and making great music. Several of them have expressed interested in being interviewed and filmed performing. Ultimately, we hope to make a film about this music and the story of the archives. Our first priority, however, is to get these reel-to-reels converted so the music is not lost. But we won't be able to do it without you. Thank you for your time and support!

    Unaweza kusema "aah,"kwani wasomaji laki tano ni wengi?Mbona kuna blogu kadhaa zimeshafikisha wasomaji milioni na ushee?" You could say that again,lakini kwangu haya ni mafanikio makubwa.Ni kweli kwamba blogu hii imekuwa hewani kwa takriban miaka 6 sasa,na pengine ingetarajiwa kuwa ingeshakuwa imetembelewa na idadi kubwa zaidi ya wasomaji kuliko hao laki 5 waliokwishatembelea hadi sasa.Ukweli mchungu ni kwamba Watanzania wengi si wapenzi wa habari zisizo za watu binafsi,au zile zisizoambatana na picha za "flani kafanya hiki,kavaa kile,kafumaniwa,kampora flani,nk."

    Kuendesha blogu ya habari,uchambuzi na maoni kunataka moyo hususan iwapo bloga husika anatamani kuona wasomaji wengi wanatembelea blogu yake.Moja ya mambo ninayojivunia ni ukweli kwamba tangu ianzishwe,blogu hii ime-focus kwenye malengo yaleyale ya awali pasipo kushawishika kuingia kwenye nyanja nyingine kwa minajili tu ya kupata wasomaji wengi.Kinachonifariji zaidi ni uwepo la wasomaji waaminifu,yaani watu ambao angalau mara kadhaa kwa wiki ni lazima waipitie blogu hii hata kama haina post mpya.Ninafahamu kuhusu hilo kupitia michanganuo mbalimbali ya takwimu za wasomaji wa blogu inayoonyesha mahali walipo wasomaji  (kwa mfano Google Analytics,Stat Counter,nk).

    Na kwa vile tangu mapema leo asubuhi "kaunta" ilikuwa inaonyesha kila dalili ya kutimia idadi hiyo ya wasomaji,niliamua kuongeza "feature" mpya ambapo sasa msomaji anaweza kuisoma blogu hii katika mionekano (sura) mbalimbali kama zinavyoonyesha picha zifuatazo.

    KATIBU Mkuu wa Chadema Dk Willibrod Slaa  amesema kuwa, hakuweza kusalimiana na Rais Jakaya Kikwete kutokana na Jiografia ya eneo la makaburini lilivyopangwa na watu wa usalama wa taifa pamoja na kamati ya mazishi kutomruhusu kufanya hivyo.

     
    Hata hivyo Dk Slaa alisisitiza kuwa, kwa upande wake, kwenye msiba siyo sehemu ya kwenda kwa ajili ya kusalimiana na watu ama kurekebisha mambo yaliyoharibika bali ni sehemu ya kumwombea marehemu.

     “Siyo hulka ya Dk Slaa kutumia misiba kama sehemu ya kusalimiana, wala kutengeza mambo yaliyoharibika, mimi huwa naenda kwenye msiba kwa lengo moja tu la kumwombea marehemu, huwa simtazami hata mtu aliyekaa pembeni yangu,” alisema Dk Slaa alipozungumza kwa njia ya simu  jana.  

    Alifafanua kuwa, katika eneo la makaburi kulikuwa na mabanda matano ambayo yalipangwa kwa ajili ya Askofu, Rais, Viongozi wa vyama vya siasa, mwili wa marehemu  na familia na banda jingine lilikuwa la watu wengine waliohudhuria mazishi hayo. 

    “Sasa kutoka alipokuwa amekaa Rais mpaka kwenye banda nilipokuwa mimi, kulikuwa na umbali wa karibu  mita 20, sasa mlitaka nikimbie kumsalimia Rais nivunje protokali kisha nikamatwe na usalama wa taifa,” alisema Dk Slaa. Alisema alikuwa mtu wa kwanza kufika makaburini kwa lengo la kuangalia jinsi kaburi la mbunge wa chama chake lilivyochimbwa kisha akaonyeshwa sehemu ya kukaa na watu wa usalama wa taifa.

     Alisema kuwa, hata katika wakati wa kuaga mwili wa Marehemu Regia Mtema, katika ukumbi wa Karejee, kulikuwa na utaratibu kama huo ambapo ilitengwa sehemu ya kukaa Makamu wa Rais, Spika wa Bunge, Kiongozi wa Kambi ya Upinzani na Makamu wake na yeye Dk Slaa akawekewa sehemu yake kama Katibu wa Chama alichokuwa akikitumika marehemu.

     “Mimi sipendi kuweka siasa kwenye mambo kama ya msiba, Dk Slaa siyo kichaa siyo kichaa aanze kukimbia kumsalimia Rais. Katika sehemu kama ile Rais huwa anakuja baada ya watu wote wakiwa wameshakaa, yeye ndiye hupita na kuanza kusalimia watu na hamjaona hata sehemu moja aliponyoosha mkono kunisalimia nikamkwepa,” alisema Dk Slaa:

     “Msiba siyo mahali pa kutengeza urafiki, au kutengeza mambo yaliyo haribika, pale ni ibada tu na kumuombea marehemu siyo sehemu ya kufanya siasa” alisisitiza Dk Slaa. Jana baadhi ya vyombo vya habari viliripoti kuwa, Dk Slaa alishindwa kusalimiana na Rais Jakaya Kikwete katika mazishi ya Regia Mtema yaliyofanyika kijijini kwao Ipangalala Morogoro juzi.Regia alifariki dunia Januari 14 kwa ajali ya gari iliyotokea katika eneo la Ruvu mkoani Pwani.

    Kwa nini Lowassa na mabilioni yake makanisani ahofie nguvu ya umma?

    NIANZE makala hii kwa kuwasilisha salamu za rambirambi kufuatia kifo cha Mbunge wa Viti Maalumu (CHADEMA), Regia Mtema. Nilishitushwa sana nilipopata taarifa za kifo chake kupitia mtandao wa Twitter hasa kwa vile siku chache tu zilizopita nilisoma bandiko lake moja katika ukumbi wa majadiliano wa mtandao wa Jamii Forums.
    Japo nilikuwa sifahamiani naye lakini nilijisikia faraja sana kuona “mwana wa pakaya” (mtoto wa nyumbani) mwenzangu anavyofanya sie wazaliwa wa Wilaya ya Kilombero tujisikie ufahari.
    Moja ya mambo magumu kabisa maishani ni kusema maneno yanayojitosheleza kwa wafiwa. Lakini hiyo si sababu ya kutosema japo machache yanayoweza kuifariji familia ya marehemu Regia, wana Kilombero, viongozi na wanachama wa CHADEMA na Watanzania kwa ujumla.
    Tulimpenda Regia lakini Mwenyezi Mungu alimpenda zaidi na kwa vile ndiye aliyemuumba basi ameamua kumchukua. Kwa waumini, tunachoweza kufanya ni kuiombea roho ya marehemu, na sote kwa ujumla tunaweza kumuenzi vizuri zaidi mbunge huyo shupavu kwa kutekeleza yale yote aliyosimamia na kupigania.
    Pengine mwenye changamoto zaidi kutokana na kifo hiki cha ghafla ni Mbunge wa Jimbo la Kilombero kupitia CCM, Abdul Mteketa. Kuna mengi ambayo dada yetu Regia alikuwa akipigania kwa ajili ya ustawi wa Jimbo la Kilombero (sambamba na maeneo mengine nchini kutokana na ubunge wa viti maalumu kumfanya kuwa mithili ya ‘mbunge wa kila jimbo’).
    Kama Rais Jakaya Kikwete alivyoonyesha mfano kwa kuweka pembeni itikadi za kisiasa wakati anatoa salamu za rambirambi za kifo cha mbunge huyo, Mteketa naye anaweza kuweka kando tofauti kati ya chama chake CCM na CHADEMA na kuendeleza yale yote yaliyoanzishwa na mbunge mwenzie (ambaye walipambana kwenye Uchaguzi Mkuu wa mwaka 2010).
    Hiyo si tu itakuwa namna bora zaidi ya kuomboleza kifo hicho bali pia kuwasaidia wana-Kilombero ambao kwa hakika wamepoteza tunu na lulu muhimu kwa jimbo hilo.
    Baada ya salamu hizo naomba kugeukia kauli ya hivi karibuni ya aliyekuwa Waziri Mkuu, Edward Lowassa, ambaye alizungumzia kuhusu matumizi ya nguvu za umma kuishinikiza mambo mbalimbali.
    Kasoro ya kwanza katika kauli hiyo ya Lowassa aliyoitoa katika harambee ya kuchangia ujenzi wa shule ya sekondari ya kanisa la FCTP huko Bigabiro, mkoani Kigoma, ni kuyaeleza matumizi hayo ya nguvu za umma kuwa yanaendeshwa na baadhi ya vyama fulani. Japo hakutaja jina la chama lakini ni wazi alikuwa anailenga CHADEMA.
    Kwa nini Lowassa hayuko sahihi katika hili? Hivi chama kisicho na dola kama CHADEMA kinawezaje kulazimisha utashi wa wananchi kushiriki kwenye harakati hizo? Kumshawishi mlalahoi akatishe siku yake shambani akahudhurie maandamano yanayokihusisha chama cha siasa ni suala gumu mara kadhaa ya urahisi alionao Lowassa kuwakusanya marafiki zake matajiri kumwaga fedha kwenye harambee zao.
    Binafsi, ninaitafsiri kauli hiyo ya Lowassa kama dharau kubwa kwa wanyonge wanaolazimika kutumia nguvu ya sauti yao kudai stahili zao.
    Hivi Lowassa anadhani wananchi wanaojitokeza kwenye maandamano au harakati nyingine kushinikiza masuala mbalimbali wanafanya hivyo kama anasa, hasa ikizingatiwa kuwa wanafahamu fika uwezekano wa kulala rumande kama si kufunguliwa mashtaka pindi Jeshi la Polisi likijisikia kuwanyanyasa?
    Tunaweza kumhurumia Lowassa katika hili kwa vile sidhani kama ameshawahi kulazimika kutumia nguvu kudai haki yake. Yeye ni miongoni mwa kikundi kidogo cha wateule wachache ambao miaka nenda miaka rudi wapo madarakani, huku mahitaji yake yakishughulikiwa na wasaidizi wake.
    Raha ya kuwa na wasaidizi, wapambe na watoa huduma ni kwamba kwa kiasi kikubwa jukumu la kuhakikisha kila jambo lipo sawa kwa ‘bosi’ linakuwa mikononi mwa watu hao.
    Katika hotuba yake kwenye harambee hiyo Lowassa alikaririwa akidai (namnukuu) “Nguvu ya umma tunayoshuhudia kwenye maandamano ya baadhi ya vyama vyetu, ingekuwa inatumika kwa kiwango kile kile kufanya kazi za kujitolea kwenye miradi ya maendeleo kama ujenzi wa sekondari zetu, hakika taifa lingepiga hatua kubwa ya maendeleo, lakini linapokuja suala la kufanya kazi nguvu ya umma hutoweka.”
    Kwa lugha nyingine Lowassa anahitimisha kuwa mahala pekee ambapo nguvu ya umma inatumika ni kwenye maandamano ya baadhi ya vyama vyetu. Huyu ndiye ambaye licha ya kuwa Waziri Mkuu huko nyuma ameshika nafasi kadhaa za uongozi serikalini na ndani ya CCM kwa miaka kadhaa.
    Je, ni kweli hajawahi kuona nguvu inayotumika na Watanzania kujiletea maendeleo yao licha ya kukwazwa na majambazi wanaotumia fursa zao kuwafisadi?
    Moja ya mambo yanayotufanya Watanzania tuendelee kumlilia Baba wa Taifa, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere ni jinsi alivyotuunganisha bila kutumia dini au urafiki na matajiri kuhamasisha maendeleo ya jamii na nchi yetu kwa ujumla.
    Nyerere alitambua umuhimu wa nguvu ya umma katika kuleta mabadiliko yanayokusudiwa hususan kukiwa na usimamizi mzuri usioambatana na maslahi binafsi.
    Uhuru wetu kutoka kwa mkoloni ulipatikana kutokana na wanyonge wa Tanganyika kuchoshwa kunyanyaswa na kukandamizwa na wakoloni na kuunganisha nguvu zao wakihamasishwa na Nyerere na wapigania uhuru wenzie na hatimaye tukapata uhuru wetu. Leo hii Lowassa anabeza harakati zenye mwelekeo kama huo.
    Historia imetuonyesha jinsi nguvu ya umma ilivyoweza kuangusha tawala mbalimbali za kidhalimu, mifano mizuri ikiwa ni huko Afrika Kusini walivyopambana na utawala wa makaburu na Ulaya ya Mashariki walivyokabiliana na udikteta wa kikomunisti.
    Na hivi karibuni tumeshuhudia nguvu ya umma ikiwang’oa madikteta Hosni Mubarak wa Misri, Ben Ali wa Tunisia na Muammar Gaddafi wa Libya.
    Lakini kwa kile kinachoweza kutafsiriwa kama unafiki wa Lowassa ni ukweli kwamba yeye alikuwa miongoni mwa waliopongeza nguvu za umma nchini Misri huku akishauri watawala wetu kujifunza katika kilichojiri nchini humo. Ikumbukwe kuwa harakati za Misri zililenga zaidi kuutokomeza utawala wa kidikteta wa Mubarak ilhali nguvu ya umma huko nyumbani imeelemea zaidi kwenye kudai haki za msingi sambamba na kukemea maovu, hususan ufisadi. Sijawahi kusikia kuwepo kwa maandamano yenye wito wa kumng’oa Rais Kikwete madarakani kwani kwa mujibu wa sheria zetu kufanya hivyo ni uhaini pasipo mjadala.
    Lakini licha ya kupongeza nguvu za umma huko Misri, ingekuwa miujiza kwa Lowassa kuunga mkono harakati kama hizo huko nyumbani kwani yeye ni miongoni mwa waathirika wake. Nguvu ya umma ikihamasishwa na CHADEMA ilimtaja mwanasiasa huyo kwenye orodha ya mafisadi (list of shame) na hadi leo hajachukua hatua za kisheria kudai amekashifiwa.
    Tukiweka kando kauli hiyo ya Lowassa, labda tujiulize kidogo kuhusu hayo mamilioni yanayochangwa na marafiki zake kwenye hafla mbalimbali makanisani. Hivi Watanzania wenzetu hao wenye uwezo wa kutoa sadaka za mamilioni wanatoa wapi fedha hizo?
    Na katika hili ninayalaumu sana makanisa yanayoweka mbele fedha pasipo kujiuliza fedha hizo zinazomwagwa kwao zinatoka wapi.
    Wakati wa uhai wake, Baba wa Taifa alionyesha upinzani mkubwa kwa wanasiasa wenye utajiri wa kupindukia lakini usio na maelezo ya kutosheleza. Ifahamike kuwa utajiri si dhambi iwapo umepatikana kihalali.
    Lakini kila mwenye uelewa anaweza kupatwa na wasiwasi kuona mwanasiasa mmoja akizunguka huku na kule kumwaga mamilioni ya shilingi makanisani. Huyu mtu ana fedha kiasi gani? Amepata wapi?
    Jingine ambalo pengine ni muhimu zaidi kwa Watanzania hasa wakati tunaelekea kwenye mchakato wa Uchaguzi ujao mwaka 2015 ni hadhari iliyotolewa na Waziri wa Mambo ya Nje na Uhusiano wa Kimataifa, Bernard Membe kuhusu wanasiasa wanaotumia nyumba za ibada kujisafisha.
    Waziri Membe alisema amani ya taifa imo shakani kama viongozi wa kidini wataruhusu nyumba za ibada kuwa kimbilio la wanasiasa na wao kutumika katika kuwasafisha, hali hiyo inaweza kusababisha mgawanyiko katika jamii.
    Lowassa kama muumini yeyote yule ana uhuru wa kutoa michango ya fedha nyingi na marafiki zake matajiri. Kadhalika, ni haki yake ya kikatiba kuongea lolote lile alimradi havunji sheria za nchi. Sasa kama yeye ana uhuru wa kumwaga mamilioni makanisani na kukemea walalahoi wanaotumia nguvu ya umma kushinikiza mambo mbalimbali, kwa nini basi asitambue kuwa walalahoi hao wanaotumia haki hiyo hiyo anayotumia yeye?
    Wanasema uhuru bila nidhamu ni uhuni, na kwa msingi huo japo ninatambua uhuru alionao Lowassa kuzungumzia masuala ya kisiasa kwenye nyumba za ibada, uhuru huo unaweza kuwa na madhara makubwa katika taifa letu. Kama walalahoi anaowakemea Lowassa ni werevu na wanafanya harakati zao nje ya nyumba za ibada basi ni vema wanasiasa wetu nao wakaepuka kugeuza sehemu hizo takatifu kuwa majukwaa ya kisiasa.
    Nimalizie kwa nukuu hii kutoka kwa Waziri Membe; “Kuweni macho na wanasiasa wanaokimbilia kwenu (viongozi wa dini), msikubali kutumiwa kwa kulinda maslahi ya wanasiasa, fanyeni kazi zenu za kuwajenga waumini wenu kwa mujibu wa mafundisho ya imani zenu, mkiruhusu kutumiwa na wanasiasa amani ya nchi mtaivuruga.”

    As we celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr, it appears we are a far less prejudiced country than we once were. Individual expressions of racism are less tolerated than ever, we have an African-American President, and African-Americans are increasingly being accepted into executive suites. Yet when we look closer, we find that Greedy Bastards have rebranded racism and made it acceptable again, by calling it "the war on drugs."
    These statistics compiled by New York Times columnist Charles Blow and author Michelle Alexander (author of The New Jim Crow) are mind-blowing.
    • Since 1971, there have been more than 40 million arrests for drug-related offenses. Even though blacks and whites have similar levels of drug use, blacks are ten times as likely to be incarcerated for drug crimes.
    • "There are more blacks under correctional control today -- in prison or jail, on probation or parole -- than were enslaved in 1850, a decade before the Civil War began."
    • "As of 2004, more African American men were disenfranchised (due to felon disenfranchisement laws) than in 1870, the year the Fifteenth Amendment was ratified prohibiting laws that explicitly deny the right to vote on the basis of race."
    • In 2005, 4 out of 5 drug arrests were for possession not trafficking, and 80% of the increase in drug arrests in the 1990s was for marijuana.
    • There are 50,000 arrests for low-level pot possession a year in New York City, representing one out of every seven cases that turn up in criminal courts. Most of these arrested are black and hispanic men.

    Why is this happening, when personal prejudice is so much less common, medicinal marijuana initiatives routinely pass around the country, and illicit drug use is accepted enough that Steve Jobs could praise psychedelic drugs as key to his creative success at Apple Computer?
    The modern drug war in politics can be traced back to political operative named Clifford White, an advisor to Barry Goldwater, who recognized that there were votes to be had in the backlash against the civil rights movement. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the war on drugs became convenient code for politicians who wanted to appeal to certain working class white voters with coded racist appeals. President Reagan used this political support to escalate the war on drugs.
    Federal law passed in 1986 allowed law enforcement agencies to seize drug money, and use it to supplement their budgets. Grabbing cash connected to drugs meant that police departments could buy more tools and training. Like the fee-for-service model in medicine, that pays doctors for performing procedures, not for making people healthier, the "forfeiture laws" effectively pay the police departments for making busts - not for reducing the drug trade.
    In fact, if the war on drugs was ever won, it would be a financial disaster for law enforcement. There's so much dirty money funding law enforcement agencies that now, according to NPR, some police departments have become "addicted to drug money".
    The second significant institutional incentive is of more recent origin, though it too has its beginnings in the Reagan era - the development of for-profit prison companies and their vast lobbying and political apparatus.
    • Prisoners now manufacture and assemble products for Microsoft, Starbucks, Victoria's Secret, Boeing, as well as body armor for soldiers and handcuff cases for law enforcement officers.
    • In 2007, taxpayers spent 74 billion on prisons, with the largest percentage increase of prisoners going to for-profit prison companies.

    The Justice Policy Institute noted that these companies make more money through longer prison sentences, but you don't need a report from a nonprofit group to know that. Just look at their own investor reports. The Corrections Corporation of America, the largest for-profit prison company in the country, lists as a business risk in its 10K to the SEC "any changes with respect to drugs and controlled substances or illegal immigration could affect the number of persons arrested, convicted, and sentenced, thereby potentially reducing demand for correctional facilities to house them." CCA also told investors it would make less money if there were lower minimum sentences and more eligibility for inmates for early release for good behavior.
    Putting people in jail and keeping them there is good for business. So that's what these companies lobby for. According to the Justice Policy Institute, these companies "have contributed $835,514 to federal candidates and over $6 million to state politicians. They have also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on direct lobbying efforts." They are large donors to state-based think tanks like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), who market harsh immigration, drug laws, and prison privatization laws to state level politicians around the country. While the rationale is no longer outright bigotry, the net effect, in terms of stripping millions of blacks of political and economic rights, is the same.
    This is the face of racism today. It isn't the racist sheriff in Alabama turning hoses and dogs onto protesters, or the all-white development or country club, but the smooth lobbyist and campaign contributor discussing the efficiency of private prison initiatives or the politician too cowardly to act on decriminalizing marijuana for fear of antagonizing a powerful lobby. It's racism, Greedy-Bastards-style.
    What's the alternative? David Kennedy, the director of the Center for Crime Prevention and Control at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, has highlighted a very simple common sense approach known as hotspotting. He advocates for sitting down the gang members that perpetrate most of the violence, police, prosecutors, and community leaders to talk about their shared problems and the consequences of crime. Such an approach has dramatically reduced homicide rates in Boston and Chicago, and across the country. Yet these programs and programs like them with proven success in reducing crime are the first to go on the chopping block, because they don't provide the budgetary incentive that forfeiture laws do.
    Today, the march for civil rights isn't about convincing Americans that racism is wrong. It is about getting money out of politics, so that the profit from institutional racism is eliminated. The Supreme Court's decision in Plessy vs. Ferguson saying "separate but equal" has been trumped by the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, eliminating all restrictions on corporate cash in politics. If we are to honor Dr. King, let us make this our generation's cause. It won't be an easy fight, but as he said, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice."
